Jaquelyn Cardinal

Jacquelyn is a sakāwithiniwak (Woodland Cree) playwright, producer, and entrepreneur hailing from Sucker Creek Cree First Nation. In all aspects of her life and work, she seeks to equip communities with the means to support themselves and each other while walking together on a shared path.

In her role as co-founder and managing director of the Indigenous owned and operated Naheyawin, Jacquelyn fulfills her duties as a Treaty person by searching for and creating tools to assist Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in an effort to reclaim the spirit of the Numbered Treaties. In her art, Jacquelyn explores her culture’s concept of infinity; misewa. Misewa refers to our connection to all that was, all that is, and all that will be. It is the understanding that all of the stories we have today exist in a sea of stories alongside those that have yet to be told in our place and time, and that all are equally important. She writes to unearth the stories that have yet to come so they can be called upon as much-needed tools in times of need by current and future generations to help them move through their complex and unique problems.

Looking into her peoples’ past and language alongside her brother, she has been able to derive critical worldviews passed down from her ancestors that she brings to organizations so that they can integrate them into their day-to-day operations and campaigns, and her artistic endeavours. A project of note is the Commonwealth Walkway’s Quest for the Golden Key promotional video, for which she wrote the underpinning story and consulted on the script.
